Competitive Positioning

Owning a position in the buyer's mind.

Workflow

Step 1Competitive Research
ObjectiveUnderstand competitive landscape, product features, and positioning
InputCompetitor list, industry data, customer feedback
OutputCompetitive analysis document with feature/pricing/messaging comparison

Key activities

Research competitor products (features, capabilities, limitations) Research competitor pricing (tiers, pricing strategy, value positioning) Research competitor messaging (value prop, positioning, target market) Research competitor go-to-market (channels, customer acquisition, sales process) Analyze win/loss data to understand why customers choose competitors

Decision points

Who are our top 3-5 competitors? What features do they have that we don't? How do they position differently than us?
Tools: Competitive intelligence platforms, competitor websites, sales win/loss databaseRoles: Competitive intelligence: research execution · Sales: win/loss analysis · Product: product comparison

Success: Competitive analysis documented with detailed comparison

Go: Go if: Top competitors analyzed, features compared, messaging documentedLoop back: Loop back if: Incomplete research, missing key competitors

Why it matters

  • Unpositioned products become "good option" — bought on price or luck. Positioning is the difference between a category leader and a commodity.

Best practices

  • Position against the alternative (do nothing, or the status quo), not just competitors.
  • Make the differentiation concrete — a buyer should feel it in one sentence.
  • Build a messaging hierarchy: primary → secondary → supporting.
  • Train sales on the position or it dies at the demo.

Common mistakes

  • Feature-list positioning — "we do X, Y, Z too".
  • Positioning by comparison to a competitor you're losing to.
  • A position in the deck that never reaches the rep.

Key questions

  • What do we uniquely own in the buyer's mind?
  • Against what alternative are we competing?
